FIERCE FEATURES: Plus Size by Mekdela

Plus-Size By: Mekdela   Sometimes I think the most American thing about me is that I am considered  20   –30 pounds overweight (according to the racist one-size-fits-all measurement, BMI or Body Mass Index. Seriously, whose bodies do you think it is based on?) I am sometimes shocked to hear that the average American woman is now my size—a size 14 in clothing (more recently, the average American woman’s size has gone up to a 16–18, according to Forbes). But then I feel a sense of belonging and community even though my body type appears to be in the minority in the California cities I have been to or lived in. Growing up, my immigrant parents tried to nag me into losing weight, for social reasons I suspect, but under the guise of health. They would encourage me to eat less, a single apple for dinner, or not to eat at all. I think that this is the only time that I have ever felt ashamed of my body and a pressing urge to lose weight and obtain a “normal” BMI (again, BMI is n...

THE MUSIC MARGINS: New Rock City

Image
New Rock City is a band from NYC with an accessible yet ever-changing sound.  "The band evolves towards new directions in every song."  But, if they had to put a label on it:  "Think Pretenders meet Joan Jett in the mid 80s/Billy Idol meets Patti Smith at CBGBs."  Love it!  New Rock City was formed in 2012, and they've been rocking ever since.  Listen to their sweet new single, Da Ratman!, below, and Subscribe to their channel !

PUNK PROSE: Lilith: Emancipation of the Beast by Kat Leena

I was cast away for reaching womanhood.  Adam certainly made no effort to assure me I wasn’t broken when the moon-blood came with crippling pains as if my abdomen was being torn open. Especially when the anguish of moon pains left me feeling dirty and wrong.   It didn’t help that I never actually fucked Adam. It was too painful and he was too forceful.  I do wish him to get fucked, but in the very least sexy way possible. Adam couldn’t handle me being born with equal power in the reflection of our Creator (or something.) He and his male heirs told this wild tale in an effort to undermine my integrity and reputation.   A tale as old as time. Isn’t it about time the truth is recognized? 10,000 years is long enough!   The Master Creator wearied of listening to Adam’s tears, and made Adam a pick-me-ass bitch from Adam’s rib so he could have his fuck toy/therapist/maid/cook/slave. Her name was Eve, but Adam called her “I’m not going to ask you again”-  obviously...

PUNK POETRY: Thunder Kiss by Alison Miller

I saw him in concert once   I tell my husband,  just Rob  Zombie not White Zombie who is now now now coming through our car’s speakers My husband is tapping his  fingers, he is playing air  guitar.  I didn’t fuck him but  I wanted to . I didn’t fuck  Rob Zombie but another man stood behind me that night  1965-5-5-5-5 and I poured my  ass into the bowl of his hips  as he pressed me against  the balcony’s plexiglass,  both of us looking down. -Alison Miller

THE MUSIC MARGINS: LastMinuteHero

Image
(THE MUSIC MARGINS is a new section of Punk Monk Magazine featuring musicians, bands, and artists. We want your music!)  LastMinuteHero is a one-person band. In Kody's own words, "After having no success starting a band, I decided to just do it myself, so I taught myself how to play drums, bass, and piano."  That's the DIY way we love at Punk Monk!  Their style is mostly instrumental alternative rock, and their Youtube channel features awesome covers with wicked riffs.  As for the name?  "The name actually came to me in a dream after stressing out one day about running out of time to do something with my life. I really liked how it sounded!"  Thank you for sharing your vulnerability, Kody! And your amazing music.  Listen to Drugstore Makeup, the single from LastMinuteHero's newest album, DELINQUENT, below.  And remember to Subscribe to their Youtube channel !
